“Good things come to those who wait.” ~ English Proverb
Do they, now? Well of course they do! The general misinterpretation here is when people believe this means sitting around brings good things to one’s life. It does when you’re a child and your parents are taking care of you, yes, they’ll bake a cake for you and even serve it. Once you’re out there in the world, this simply means have patience. Do what you do not because of the outcome, but because you want to, and eventually it will be worth it. Doing nothing will indeed lead to many things happening around you, yet rarely will they affect you and if they do, they will most likely not be good at all. Take the responsibility in your hands, but worry not about the reward — if you have accomplished things as intended then it will eventually come to you as well.
“It’s like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger they were. And sometimes you didn’t want to know the end… because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it’s only a passing thing… this shadow. Even darkness must pass.” ~ J.R.R. Tolkien, The Two Towers
A shadow can appear only where there is light, or rather lack of light. When there is no light at all, a shadow does not exist, darkness is what takes over. Light is the enemy of the darkness, and if we do not bring light into our lives, whether in the form of hope, courage, or support from people we know, then darkness is all we would be left with. Which would not mean that the end is near – the end is never near. What could be near is our own downfall, usually achieved by prematurely giving up goals. No one said the ride would not be bumpy, so if you stop at the first rock you meet down the road, you are literally making yourself your own worst enemy.
There will be times when giving up seems logical, but we need to ensure ourselves that this is the correct decision and that we’re not giving up simply because it is easier than dealing with the difficulties. Difficulties are all around us, sometimes even walking down the stairs is difficult for someone but they will still give it their big shot. We talk of fairy tales and celebrities, making various characters our heroes. Which is all great, because we’re born literally as an empty bottle, which we then fill with a single drop of everything which surrounds us. Following great heroes in these early years, regardless if real or fictional heroes, are essential to ensure our bottle has as much crystal clear water as possible because with water if you get a single piece of dirt it reflects on the whole water. We need less bad and more good during these times. The idea being that once we reach an age of maturity, we slowly start using that experience and knowledge, our bottle of water. The main goal a human being can ever achieve is to become their own hero. And heroes don’t give up when things get tough.
“It is impossible to live without failing at something, unless you live so cautiously that you might as well not have lived at all, in which case you have failed by default.” ~ Joanne Kathleen Rowling
To understand victory, we need to taste defeat. Many roads can lead to dead-end, and sometimes there is nothing further we can do for a cause. Sometimes we need to face the gravity of a situation and accept failure, because heroes fail. Heroes fail more often rather than less. But do you know what else heroes do? They rise to their highest point yet after their worst failures. To reach the skies, one must hit rock bottom. Dealing with bumps on the road can sometimes seem impossible, and that is when we need to strike the hardest. That is when we need all the hope, courage, and strength. At our biggest moments of weakness we need to be the strongest. Not because we cannot manage the bumps on the road, but because even after we achieve that, what comes next could be a desert rather than a lake. It’s the patience we need to have strength for, because it could be a while before we reach paradise after going through hell.
